Tiny Thinkers Charlie and the Tortoise MJ Mouton Cara Santa Maria David Smalley Jezreel S Cuevas 9780692548271 Books Reviews
This book is so cute! The kids (6 and 4) love it and it has quickly turned into one of our favorite bedtime stories. The illustration is adorable, it is very informative, an age appropriate introduction to Charles Darwin and the theory of evolution. Plus, the flow of the book is nice, rhymes keep young kids engadged, and it allows them to identify with this great biologist. Going to order a few more copies for my older child's class, our local library and a friend. Would 100% recommend this book and can't wait for others in the series ๐๐๐
This is a very nice booklet about an important subject and with beautiful pleasing illustrations. Nevertheless, I give only 4 points for lack of scientific proceeding.
Personified animals are usual characters in children's books, and kids know very well that real critters don't speak; so never mind a talking tortoise on the Galรกpagos Islands.
But the slow quiet reptile turns out to be a true chatterbox. A short hint regarding Darwin's finches would have been enough, something like "I am very old. If I remember correctly, bird's beaks were not so different in old times."
Such a clue would have let Charlie the chance to do the rest of the job discover evolution by observing and comparing, measuring and testing, organizing and thinking in order to gain knowledge and to explain past and present things and events, and possibly predict future ones.
Instead the tortoise goes on speaking for further 5 double pages, explaining all (s)he knows about body change and adaptation of bird's beaks to feeding.
This "revelation" of evolution is no science; it is no more and no less plausible than the biblical burning bush wherein a god named YHWH reveals himself to Moses.
Awesome to finally have some great science literature for kids! Hell, this could teach a bunch of adults I know.
My 4 year old and I both adore this book! The artwork is vibrant and the story is educational and fun. My daughter loves comparing all the finches and finding the matching bugs and animals on each page. I can't wait for more Tiny Thinkers books. Great job!
What a wonderfully engaging book. The colors and the rhyming storyline is a great way to get kids to learn about Charles Darwin and get a basic introduction to the theory of evolution. Our kids loved looking for Hitch and spotting the differences in the beaks of the finches. I have bought more copies to give to teachers I know. Hopefully the future Tiny Thinkers books are this beautifully done.
My 3 year old son may be a touch too young for the book, but the brilliant illustrations drew in his attention at once. He followed enough to enjoy the different beaks of the finches, and the pictures of species in transition. I'm looking forward to him growing up reading and understanding this book.
I read this book right away to my four year old. She seemed to like it and it had nice illustrations. I like that the book covers the science of evolution since i find it difficult to find any children's books about this topic. It is written in very simple terms and is an introduction to Charles Darwin and his studies by showing him as a child. I wish the book could have been just a bit longer and included a little more information about the other animals on the Galapagos Islands. It is a good way to start conversations about how animals evolve to adapt to different environments.
We received this book today and have read through it twice already. The artwork is captivating and gorgeously done. Both of our boys absolutely loved it! I know this will be our nightly read for a while, and I am perfectly fine with that. This is a must have for children of ALL ages!
